Music Education (BME)

Description

The University offers a bachelor of music education (BME) for students who wish to obtain licensure to teach in elementary and secondary schools.

Music education students choose between two concentrations—the choral/general education concentration or the instrumental/general education concentration—each of which leads to Indiana kindergarten-12 teaching licensure. Students also may add a choral or instrumental option to their degrees, resulting in full K-12 licensure.

Coursework, observation and teaching in the public school setting, and participation in professional organizations prepare students for a successful teaching career. In addition, students participate in several special collaborative music programs (instrument and voice coaching, computer composition, ensemble support) with local schools.

The program culminates in a semester-long student teaching assignment. Students are placed at two schools in order to gain hands-on experience at both primary and secondary levels. Expert University music faculty provide direct supervision of student teachers, who also receive invaluable guidance from the cooperating teacher.

Each student receives a solid foundation in comprehensive, integrated musicianship by participating in performance ensembles, by taking private lessons, by attending concerts, and by studying music theory, music history and literature, piano, music technology, scoring, and conducting.

Other opportunities include the University's Honors Program and study abroad programs, which range from summer programs to a single semester or a full academic year in over 56 countries.

In addition to the University's regular admission process, there is a separate admission process for a student to be admitted as a music major. For further information, visit the School of Music.

The Music Education Program has a strong heritage of training highly qualified music teachers since the institution's founding in 1865—and continues to attract students challenged and excited by the prospect of educating young people in the rewarding field of music.

Our graduates have achieved distinction throughout the State of Indiana, the nation, and the world as inspiring teachers, renowned performing artists, and visionary music business leaders.

The School of Music takes great pride in the many outstanding music education graduates who teach in public and private schools in Indiana and throughout the country. These alumni have distinguished themselves in the elementary school general music classroom; as middle school band, chorus, jazz, orchestra, and general teachers; and as high school band, chorus, jazz, and orchestra directors.

In addition, the School of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The Music Education Program holds accreditation with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and the Music Business Program is affiliated with NAMM (International Music Products Association).

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Students have many sources of financial support for their studies, including financial aid, work-study programs, veterans' benefits, and special scholarships for entering freshmen and transfer students.

Music scholarships are awarded through a competitive audition process that begins in November and concludes by March 1 of each academic year. To be considered for a music scholarship for the following academic year, students must have auditioned by March 1.
