Description

Indiana State University art students, working with two professional artists with ties to Terre Haute, have finished the latest Gilbert Wilson Memorial Mural Project. The latest mural, which celebrates the role the Wabash River plays in the community, will be dedicated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3.

The mural was completed as part of the 2013 Year of the River initiative and the College of Arts and Sciences’ Community Semester Series. The project was funded through Indiana State University’s Strategic Plan “Energize Downtown” initiative and the Center for Community Engagement.

The mural joins three others from the Wilson project. These include the most recent work on the third floor of the Terre Haute Children’s Museum by David Erickson, professor emeritus of art; Tom Torluemke’s mural at the Booker T. Washington Center; and the mural on south wall of the former Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club building on Third Street by Jeff Zimmerman.

The Gilbert Wilson Memorial Mural Project, named after the prominent WPA artist, is an ongoing initiative of Indiana State’s department of art. Led by faculty members Brad Venable and Nancy Nichols-Pethick, its goal is to create public works of art in the Terre Haute community through engaged and collaborative activities with students, community members, and artists.
