Tax Transcripts

If you are reading this page, you should have been notified that the Office of Student Financial Aid needs your IRS tax return transcript to continue processing your application for aid.

There are two ways to provide this data:

IRS Data Retrieval Instructions

IRS data retrieval is the fastest and easiest way to electronically provide your information by downloading your IRS data into the FAFSA automatically.

Follow the instructions below and/or watch this video.

  • Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov, and click the green login button.
  • Enter the student's log-in credentials.
  • You will be directed to a page to view processed information or make FAFSA corrections. To use the IRS data retrieval tool, you must select "make FAFSA corrections."
  • You will then be prompted to enter your FAFSA PIN and create a password.
  • The introduction page provides you with general information about several processes. To navigate to the financial information section, click on "Financial Information" at the top of the page.
  • If you are a dependent student, you have now reached the parent financial information section. If your parents have already completed their tax return and can answer "NO" to all of the questions, you are eligible to use the IRS data retrieval tool. Otherwise, if you are an independent student, skip to step 13 to start the student IRS data retrieval process.
  • Once the parents have completed the questions and entered their FAFSA PIN, click "Link to IRS."
  • Click "OK" to allow the FAFSA web site to transfer the parents to the IRS web site to access their IRS tax information.
  • Once transferred to the IRS web site, enter the parents' personal information exactly as it appears on their IRS tax return. Then click "submit."
  • If the IRS is able to validate your parents' personal information, their IRS tax information will display. Now check the box under "Transfer My Tax Information into the FAFSA" and then click "Transfer Now."
  • You will now be taken back to the FAFSA web site with all of the required IRS tax information updated for your parents.
  • If the student has filed a IRS tax return, click "next" at the bottom of the page. Otherwise, click "sign & submit" at the top of the page and go to step 19 below.
  • You have now reached the student financial information section. If you have already completed your tax return and can answer "NO" to all of the questions, you are eligible to use the IRS data retrieval tool. Otherwise, you will need to submit an IRS tax return transcript.
  • Once you have completed the questions and entered your FAFSA PIN, then click "Link to IRS."
  • Click "OK" to allow the FAFSA web site to transfer you to the IRS web site to access your IRS tax information.
  • Once transferred to the IRS web site, enter your personal information exactly as it appears on your IRS tax return. Then click "submit."
  • If the IRS is able to validate your personal information, your IRS tax information will display. Now check the box under "Transfer My Tax Information into the FAFSA" and then click "Transfer Now."
  • You will now be taken back to the FAFSA web site with all of the required IRS tax information updated for you. Click "next" at the bottom of the page.
  • You will be taken to a page that displays all of the changes made. Scroll to the bottom and click "next."
  • Then enter the student's FAFSA PIN, click both "agree" to the terms and "submit my FAFSA now."
  • You will then be directed to your confirmation page that will list important information for you. Within 5 days, your MyISU Portal should reflect that the IRS data retrieval tool was used to satisfy the request for your tax documents

IRS Tax Return Transcript Instructions

Some applicants may be ineligible for IRS data retrieval. If you filed as "married filing separately" or your FAFSA otherwise states you are ineligible, you must request a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS.

Follow the instructions below and/or watch this video.

  • To order a tax return transcript, visit the IRS or call 1-800-908-9946. This service is free but requires 5-10 business delivery days. Please note the tax return transcript is sent to the address listed on the tax return.
  • Once you have received the tax return transcript, write the student's 991 ID number at the top of each page, and submit a copy to the Office of Student Financial Aid.
  • If you filed an extension or otherwise cannot request an IRS tax transcript, your financial aid may not disburse until the IRS has accepted your Federal tax return. Some special circumstances apply. Contact the Office of Student Financial Aid for additional information.
