Martin County Sheriff's Department Hires First Female Deputy

(SHOALS) - The Martin County Sheriff's Department has hired their first female deputy.

Andrea Barrett was sworn on May 3. Barrett has completed a 40-hour pre-basic class in Boone County. She will begin her career serving as a courthouse deputy. After a few months, she will become a road deputy and receive more training before finally attending the Indiana State Police Law Enforcement Academy.

"I'm really looking forward to working with the people in Martin County," she said. "There's a lot of learning to do and I'm excited."

Sheriff Travis Roush is proud to have Barrett on the force.

"She is a great person and a great addition to the department," he added.

Barrett is excited for a chance to be a role model for young ladies who are looking into the area of law enforcement.

Barrett graduated from Scecina High School in Indianapolis where she played basketball, softball, and volleyball. She completed a Bachelor of Science in human and environmental systems with minors in criminal justice and environmental sustainability. at Indiana State University. She was honored as the Outstanding Graduating Senior in the College of Arts and Sciences and received Magna Cum Laude honors.

Barrett grew up in Indianapolis. When she was a teen she wrecked her car. The first officer on the scene was a female officer. She says the officer was kind and caring. She knew that she wanted to become a police officer.

Sheriff Travis Rousch says they didn't hire the best female for the job, but rather the best applicant for the job.
