Reading Summit Presenters are:

Katie Garner, M.ED. (author of Secret Stories Cracking the Reading Code with the Brain in Mind), is an internationally known keynote speaker and literacy consultant with 30 years of experience working in classrooms around the US and Canada. Her “backdoor-to-the-brain” approach to simplifying science of reading-based phonics instruction aligns existing reading curriculum with the neural research showing how our brains learn best. Bringing neuroscience into the forefront of literacy and learning, Katie’s sessions spotlight evidence-based strategies for fast-tracking the phonics skills kids need to read. Her practical and proven methods have been shared in both lecture and panel discussion at Harvard University and MIT, as well as in numerous professional journals, research articles and publications.

Jennifer Hasser, M.Ed., is a nationally recognized speaker and trainer in the field of reading and dyslexia. She is the founder and Executive Director of Kendore Learning, which provides training, curriculum, and materials to educators across the nation. Jennifer’s passion for education began in the high school behavior disorder classroom, where she was awarded Special Education Teacher of the Year. Her ongoing interest in the literacy challenges facing schools and has led to the design, development, and implementation of comprehensive programs for public schools. She is a regular presenter at literacy and dyslexia conferences and serves as an educational consultant to schools across the nation. Her training and curricula are accredited by IMSLEC and IDA. Jennifer is also the founder of Atlanta-based Syllables Learning Centers, where she has helped thousands of struggling readers across the globe. While serving as President of the International Dyslexia Association’s Georgia Branch, she founded the now nationally recognized Dyslexia Dash 5K and twice received the Outstanding Service Award for her contributions to dyslexia awareness. Most recently, she launched Kendore Cares, a nonprofit organization devoted to providing literacy services to under-served students and communities.

 

Lucy Hart Paulson, Ed.D., CCC-SLP is an author and literacy specialist with a mission of bringing research to practice. She is also a speech-language pathologist with many years of experience working with educators and with young children and their families in a wide range of educational settings. In addition, Lucy was an associate professor teaching and conducting research in the areas of language and literacy development and disorders.  She provides professional development using a broad-based perspective blending areas of language and literacy together resulting in effective, appropriate, and engaging language-based literacy instruction and intervention for all children. Finally, Lucy is the co-author of the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) for Early Childhood Educators, 2nd EditionBuilding Early Literacy and Language Skills, a resource and activity guide for young children, and for Good Talking Words, 2nd Edition, a social communication skills program for young children.

 

Timothy Rasinski, Ph.D., is professor of literacy education at Kent State University and director of its award-winning reading clinic. Prior to coming to Kent State Tim taught literacy education at the University of Georgia. He taught for several years as an elementary and middle school classroom and Title I teacher in Omaha, Nebraska. His scholarly interests include reading fluency and word study, reading in the elementary and middle grades, and readers who struggle. Tim has written over 200 articles and has authored, co-authored or edited over 50 books or curriculum programs on reading education, including The Fluent Reader and The Fluent Reader in Action. His research on reading has been cited by the National Reading Panel and has been published in journals such as Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Reading Psychology, and the Journal of Educational Research. In 2010 Tim was elected to the International Reading Hall of Fame.

 

 

Math Summit Presenters are:

 

Graham Fletcher has served in education as a classroom teacher, math instructional lead, and currently as a math specialist. Graham’s work with the math progressions and problem-based lessons has led him to present throughout North America and beyond. He, along with Tracy Johnston Zager, are the authors of  Building Fact Fluency: A Toolkit for Addition  & Subtraction and Building Fact Fluency: A Toolkit for  Multiplication & Division—two research-driven, engaging, ready-to-use resources—in your school to create cohesion in math instruction by using common routines and formative assessment strategies that students will recognize across the grades. He also is coauthor, along with Miriam Small, of Fun and Fundamental Math for Young Children: Building a Strong Foundation in PreK–Grade 2. His website, gfletchy.com, provides helpful information for teachers and students.

He is continually advocating for best practice in elementary mathematics by seeking new and innovative ways to support students and teachers in their development of conceptual understanding.

 

Greg Smedley-Warren, also known as “Mr. Greg,” is a kindergarten teacher and the creator of The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. He has been teaching for 18 years. He has taught fifth grade, second grade, and is now in his 15th year in kindergarten which is his passion and his calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started.  When he was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!), he called his mom and cried.  But on the first day, he fell in love and knew that Kindergarten was where he belonged.  He has remained in Kindergarten ever since.  He plans to never leave the classroom as the kids are what drive him to continue his growth as a teacher and as a person.

When he’s not in the classroom, blogging, and doing all things teach, he enjoy spending time with his family.   He live in Nashville, Tennessee with his husband (known as The Mister), their daughter, Adelynn, and their dog, Butters.

 

Kristen Acosta has been a math educator for over 20 years. She has taught TK-8 math as both a classroom teacher and a district math coach. As a math coach, Kristen found her calling in supporting other teachers. She has published several articles for nationally recognized magazines such as The Communicator and Edutopia. Additionally, Kristen was nominated for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics. Kristen’s work with math routines such as 3 Act tasks and Clothesline Math has been featured at Mashable Math, Math Before Breakfast, Edutopia, Debate Math and Ready Set Growth. She was featured in the California Educator. Kristen continues giving presentations, nationally and internationally, at various math conferences. Kristen’s latest work has been to author the book titled “Hanging Math Out to Dry with Elementary Clothesline Math.” Kristen’s true passion is to have students as well as teachers realize that math can be innovative, engaging, and purposeful. The best math practices don’t necessarily have to come from a textbook. Math should be about active learning, conversation, and exploring.

 

Dr. Nicki Newton is an education consultant who works with schools and districts around the country on elementary math curriculum (including best practices, guided math and math centers) as well as curriculum mapping.  She has taught elementary school, middle school, and graduate school. Having spent several years as a bilingual teacher and staff developer, she has an extensive background in Sheltered Instruction and English Language Learner Strategies. She has presented at several national and international conferences on education– including being an invited speaker for the NEA as well as working on a special interdisciplinary social studies curriculum project for the AFT.

Dr Nicki has an Ed.M. and an Ed.D from the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University specializing in Teacher Education and Curriculum Development.  She uses her strong understanding of curriculum to address the differentiated needs of all students in her work with teachers and administrators. Dr. Nicki builds upon current curriculum research and theory to provide practical, realistic 21st century strategies in today’s classrooms.  Dr. Newton is greatly interested in teaching and learning practices around the world and has researched education in Denmark, Guatemala and India.
