Teaching Interests

  • History and Cultural Traditions from Africa and the African Diaspora (especially music, dance, art/art history, religion and orature.) Also have taught classes in International Studies, Intro to World Music and Culture, and Brazilian History and Culture.

Research Interests

  • Afro-Brazilian history, culture, religion and music / dissertation research: African liberation ideologies, contemporary social movements, youth, and Afro-Brazilian carnival music (20th-21st cent).<br>Diaspora theory and intellectual history of African Diaspora studies; Identity in the diaspora, black resistant practices; African expressive culture.

Dr. Colleen Haas received her doctorate in ethnomusicology from Indiana University and is part of the core faculty in the African and African American Studies program in the History Department at Indiana State University. Though trained in Western percussion, she has devoted over 20 years of study of West African and Brazilian percussion traditions with master teachers in the U.S. and abroad. Colleen also works as a professional musician and is a master teacher for the Smithsonian World Music Pedagogy Certification Programs around the U.S.

Dissertation: The Artistry of Neguinho do Samba: Afro-Brazilian Girls and Samba-reggae Music in the Local Neighborhood

(In process) Music and Belonging: A Research-based, Multi-media Resource for Middle School Music Teachers, a curriculum guide for middle school teachers applying Brazilian music activities for international understanding while balancing music education  with social goals (i.e., supportive classrooms for increased social cohesion, anti-bullying initiatives, building school communities).

Program coordination through African and African American Studies including hosting performance groups from Africa for the campus and the Terre Haute communities; and numerous presentations throughout the year on topics related to Africa and the Diaspora. Noted events include: Public lectures for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Lotus Music and Arts Foundation, Hands-on workshops with master musicians and dancers from Ghana.
