Description

Join us for a conversation focused on the racism against Asian/Pacific Islanders. Like all forms of American racism, racism against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders is long-standing and takes on many forms, including the objectification of Asian American women and the presumption of foreignness. Most recently, the scapegoating of China to deflect from the U.S.'s inadequate response to the COVID-19 pandemic has helped to usher in an alarming rise in hate crimes targeting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, particularly the elderly and women. According to a study conducted by the Center for Hate and Extremism, anti-AAPI incidents in major American cities have increased 149% since March of last year. 2020 may be remembered as the year of the pandemic, but the centuries-old epidemic of racism continues to infect and toxify American society. We invite the ISU community and the public at large to participate in this very important virtual Town Hall discussion and to submit questions and personal narratives, which a group of panelists will address, followed by a real-time Q & A. Our hope is that this discussion will shed light on what anti-AAPI racism looks like, how it affects both AAPI and non-AAPI Americans, and possible ways to combat it and/or serve as an AAPI ally. To submit questions, comments, and personal narratives, click on this link https://indstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bNT4pGzHiGKAIZg The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 16, 2021 by 4pm. The Town Hall will take place on Thursday, April 22, 4:00-5:00 p.m. (ET), via Zoom. To register: (https://indstate-edu.zoom.us/j/95993339851
